This half term, our learning journey is ‘Ticket to Ride’, with a focus on transport and travel. Through a range of exciting texts, activities, and hands‑on experiences, the children will explore how we travel on land, sea, air, and even into space.
We will enjoy learning linked to a wide variety of stories and themes, including:
The Snail and the Whale, Oliver Jeffers stories, Emma Jane’s Aeroplane, The Naughty Bus, Mr Gumpy’s Outing, Magic Train Ride, Space, and many more.
The Snail and the Whale, Oliver Jeffers stories, Emma Jane’s Aeroplane, The Naughty Bus, Mr Gumpy’s Outing, Magic Train Ride, Space, and many more.
In Literacy, we will be encouraging the children to write more independently and confidently, carefully listening to and recording the sounds in words. Daily Phonics and Guided Reading sessions will continue, with a strong focus on developing comprehension skills through discussion, prediction, and retrieval.
In Mathematics, the children will build upon their counting and number knowledge. The children will build confidence in counting to larger numbers using a range of strategies, while securing key number facts through varied practice. They will count objects, actions, and sounds accurately using one‑to‑one correspondence and understand that the final number counted tells us how many. Through exploring different representations such as ten‑frames, finger patterns, and the rekenrek, they will compare quantities, recognise doubles, and begin to identify odd and even numbers. They will develop an understanding of how numbers relate to one another, order numbers, play number track games, join in with counting beyond 20, and begin to apply concepts such as one more and one less. Conceptual subitising skills will also be developed, helping children recognise when counting is and is not needed
As part of our wider curriculum, the children will enjoy a rich variety of practical and creative learning experiences. In Design and Technology, they will design and make their own fruit kebabs, developing an understanding of healthy eating, food choices, and basic food preparation skills. In Music, the children will explore creative movement, using their bodies to respond to rhythm, tempo, and a range of musical styles. In RE, our enquiry question is “What can we learn from stories?” The children will share and discuss Aesop’s fable The Boy Who Cried Wolf, alongside other stories, to explore the messages and lessons they teach. In History, the children will discover similarities and differences between transport in the past and present. In Geography, we will explore different parts of the world through ‘soundscapes’, helping the children to recognise and compare a range of environments beyond the one in which we live.
