Year 5 had a fantastic day developing their food technology skills as they learned how to prepare their very own fresh salad.
The children practised a range of safe knife techniques, including the bridge position and the claw grip, as well as using a grater confidently and carefully.
Using a colourful selection of ingredients (lettuce, carrot, radish, pepper, cucumber, and tomato) everyone contributed to creating a healthy salad bowl. They also made a dressing of olive oil and balsamic vinegar, which added the perfect finishing touch. Throughout the day, the children took part in a variety of research projects.
They explored different types of salads from around the world, creating informative posters, as well as designing their own step‑by‑step salad recipes, thinking carefully about ingredients, equipment, and method.
At the end of the day, Year 5 enjoyed a taste‑testing session, trying their salads and discussing the flavours, textures, and presentation. They then completed an evaluation, reflecting on what went well and what they might improve next time. The children showed fantastic teamwork, creativity, and enthusiasm.
Most importantly, they all really enjoyed eating the salads they had worked so hard to prepare. A brilliant day of learning, tasting, and cooking for Year 5!
