Year 4 have made a fantastic start to the new school year and have quickly settled back into school life. It has been wonderful to see the children re-establishing our school values of being safe, kind and responsible, while embracing all the exciting learning opportunities ahead. We have already enjoyed sharing some of our achievements from outside school. Children have proudly told us about their successes in rock climbing, receiving Player of the Match awards in football, and even baking delicious bread at home. We love celebrating these achievements and learning more about our classmates’ talents and interests.
In Guided Reading, we are thoroughly enjoying our class text, The Land of Roar. The story takes us on an adventure into an imaginary world filled with excitement, mystery and danger. The children have been making predictions, exploring characters’ feelings and discussing the surprising events that unfold throughout the story.
In English, we have been exploring the beautiful books The Books in My Hands and The Bog Baby. These texts have inspired thoughtful discussions and some fantastic writing. The children have also completed their first published pieces in our new publishing books. These special books will travel with them throughout their time at Brookside, allowing them to see the progress they make in their handwriting, presentation, quantity and quality of work over the years.
In Maths, we have been developing our understanding of place value with numbers up to 10,000. We have been comparing and ordering 4-digit numbers and learning how to round numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1,000. The children have demonstrated excellent reasoning skills and resilience when tackling new challenges and used place value charts to help.
In Geography, we have been exploring the fascinating world of rainforests. We have discovered where rainforests are located around the globe and why they are so important to our planet. The children have learnt about the different layers of the rainforest and the incredible plants and animals that live within them. We have also discussed ways that we can help protect these precious environments for future generations.
Our French lessons have focused on learning the days of the week to discuss the weather throughout the week. The children have enjoyed practising their pronunciation and are beginning to recognise and use the vocabulary with growing confidence. We are looking forward to building our French language skills throughout the year.
We are incredibly proud of the positive attitude and enthusiasm that Year 4 have shown so far and are excited to see what the rest of the term will bring!
