Year 5 had a really busy end of Spring term and hopefully you’ve been told all about it!
We celebrated British Science Week (with the theme being: Change and Adapt) by pairing up different animals with the adaptations they have, to better suit them to their environment, before researching our own chosen animals.
Using your donations of cardboard, we designed and made working carousels which we programmed with the Crumbles. It was great to see the children apply their knowledge of the different Crumble circuits to make their carousels spin and light up. Some of the results were amazing, although some rides would have been pretty fast and wild.
Last term Year 5 also made great use of the practical room to make a salad, dressing and cheese straws! We started our day talking about how to stay safe in the kitchen and ensuring we understood the importance of personal hygiene and how to keep the kitchen itself hygienic. Throughout the day we researched salads: when did they first appear, who introduced them and how have they changed? We learnt about different chopping skills (like bridge and claw) and studied an example of a salad recipe before creating our own!
Throughout the day we used the practical room in groups. Each group made a salad that included carrot, lettuce, pepper, radish, cucumber and tomato. We followed a recipe to make cheese straws, using flour, water and cheese – they were delicious and our favourite part of the day. When eating our salad we tried it by itself and then with a balsamic dressing; we were surprised by how many of us liked, and even preferred, the salad with the balsamic dressing.
So far this term you may have heard about our egg-cellent science lesson. We have moved on to looking at life cycles, starting with the life cycle of a bird. We studied the inside of an egg altogether on the board before we, much to the children’s delight, cracked open some eggs to have a go at identifying the different parts ourselves! It was great to apply our understanding to a real egg, even if it made Kangaroos and Wombats very smelly classrooms.
We have also now started our Viking topic in Geography/History and have started by looking at where the Vikings came from and where they settled. We’re really excited to dive into this topic for the rest of the term!
