History, English & Math’s in Orcas Class

Lily CollinsYear 4, Orcas

Orcas class has recently finished our Maths block on Addition and Subtraction using column method. The children have been doing really well but we need to make sure that we’ve checked the symbol and have done the correct calculation. We have been adding and subtracting 4-digit numbers and have been improving our place value knowledge when exchanging across columns.

In English, we have been reading a wonderful book called ‘In Our Hands’ by Lucy Farfort. In the story, the colour begins slowly draining from the world until it is all dull and grey. Fortunately, a small girl finds a single drop of colour washed up in a bottle and through teamwork is able to nurture it until colour returns to their part of the world. It is a lovely story about how we can work together to make positive changes in the world around us. The children have been writing persuasive letters and diary entries as the characters who are seeking support and help to bring colour back to the world and it has really captured their imaginations.

To celebrate Black History Month, we have been listening to music by various different black artists and in History we have been learning about some famous and important figures in Black history. We carried out research to find out about a range of amazing people from scientists to musicians. We found out more about Rosa Parks, Mary Seacole, Dr Mae Jemison, Harry Belafonte, Paul Stephenson and Benjamin Banneker.
