A busy start to the term for Year 4 Orcas Class of 2023/24!

We have had a busy start to the new school year. In Science we have been learning about our digestive system in our Science topic of Eat, Chew, Poo!

In Geography, we have looked at key features of rainforests, including their location, climate and the types of plants and animals that live there. We have learnt about the four different layers in a rainforest: the emergent layer, the canopy, the understory and the forest floor. Different animals and plants make their homes in each layer of the rainforest. Tropical rainforests support the greatest diversity of living organisms on Earth. Although they cover less than 2 percent of Earth’s surface, rainforests house more than 50 percent of all plants and animals found on land.

In Maths, we have been consolidating our knowledge of Place Value and how we can use rounding to help us estimate. We have used number lines to help us understand how when rounding to 10, 100 or 1000 we go either up or down to the nearest multiple. Orcas have also been practising their 4x tables to get them ready for their Times Table Check next year.

In English, Orcas class have retold the story of The Bog Baby with their own ideas for different creatures that they might find and adopt. A note to parents: You might want to check in your sheds to make sure that your child hasn’t found a Bog Baby of their own. They might be living in a bucket with shells and might be feeling poorly after surviving on cake crumbs!

We have also learnt about how vital dung beetles are in clearing away faeces from animals all around the world. The children have used that knowledge to create a fact file about these amazing creatures.
