Creativity Week – Day 4 in Orcas!

Lily CollinsYear 4, Orcas

06.07.23

Today in Orcas class, we learned about Japanese block printing and the symbolism of certain animals in their art. We found out that butterflies represent the recently departed but two could signify a long marriage and a turtle is a sign of wisdom. In Japan, they would normally carve things wood but we used polystyrene. Some of our attempts were more successful than others but we were able to adapt our designs and try again.

We also learnt some Japanese numbers and created our own number scrolls. In Japan, they write right to left horizontally or from top to bottom vertically. Some people say that learning to speak Japanese is much easier than learning to write it.
