Over the last two weeks, following our science work last term, on life-cycles, Year 5 have been looking after caterpillars. We began with 5 caterpillars in each class and watched them as they grew and eventually made their way to the top of the pot to become chrysalides. We them transferred them into a new habitat and waited for them to emerge, allowing us to experience the wonder of metamorphosis first-hand. We kept an observational diary, taking measurements and logging any changes that we could see. We were very lucky that all ten of our butterflies (painted ladies) emerged. We set them free at the end of this week, watching some of them settle on plants and bushes in the quiet garden.
