Year 4 had a brilliant day out at Magdelene Farm! We started our day looking at different living things in the local river habitat and playing games to help us understand food chains. In groups, the children were set a challenge to make the longest food chain they could out of a set of living things. Using their brilliant scientific knowledge, the children were able to solve this problem! Then, we got a chance to be creative. In groups, we made a habitat for a frog or an otter out of things that we found in the area. The children thought carefully about what things could represent in their habitats.

We then got a chance to walk around the farm to look at some of the animals and wildlife. We saw a grass snake, slow worm, pigs, goats and the inside of a beehive.

After a quick lunch break, we were back out again but this time by the pond. In smaller groups, we took measurements of the pond’s depth, temperature and cleanliness. We then got to go pond dipping to see what living things we could find. As a class, we found so many insects and larvae but a special mention for the dragonfly nymph – a rare find.Β
