A very busy start to the New Year!

It has been a busy two weeks for Year 6. In spite of the miserable weather and dark days, the children have been working incredibly hard.

In English, we have started reading, ‘The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane’. At first, we were a little dubious – how can a book about a china rabbit be good? However, we are now hooked: Edward started as a vain, pompous character, yet after encountering the depths of the ocean and a rubbish dump, he is slowing changing and starting to appreciate love and friendship.

In maths we have been learning about ratio and proportion and have applied this to word problems. We have started to learn how to calculate percentages and are revising about properties of shape. Next week, we are moving onto algebra (which is always a highlight for the children).

In geography, we have started a brand-new topic: mountains. We have used an atlas to locate the seven summits and discovered how they are formed and their features. Over the next few weeks we will be learning about climate and how people manage to live on mountains.

In computing, we are learning about spreadsheets. This week, we input data into Google sheets and calculated the distance and time it takes to get to a number of attractions around Britain.

In science, we have discovered the effects of drugs, alcohol and smoking on the human body. Next week, we are moving onto electricity where we will be making circuits.

This week we had an assembly by Kooth which is a service provided by the NHS which offers free online counselling for children aged 11 – 19. The children had the opportunity to share ideas for how to look after their mental health. It is worth checking out the website with your child.

In PE, the children have been performing floor routines in gymnastics with Mr Perry and Mr Ball. Whilst with Mrs Wilkins and Mrs Whatling, the children have been playing Jump Ball which involves jumping from spot to spot with the aim of knocking balls off a target – it is quite tricky!

The children have been very fortunate to be taught music by a specialist teacher from Millfield for the past weeks. They have been learning some songs for Millfield’s annual choral concert on 21st March.
