Start of Year Update

Brookside School AdminYear 1, Class News, Jaguars, Tigers

The children have had a fantastic start to Year One and we are incredibly proud of how well they have adapted to all the changes in routines and expectations.
In our Maths lessons we have been focusing on place value for numbers under 20. This means we have practised writing the numbers, reading the numbers and beginning to represent them using sticks of ten and ones. At the end of this week we have also looked at our number bonds to 10 and 20. This is when there are two numbers that go together to make 10 or 20 such as 7 + 3 = 10 and 14 + 6 = 20. The children are expected to know these facts from memory by the time they leave Year One so please help your child by practising them at home.
In our English lessons we have been looking at stories about Paddington Bear. The children have been focusing on writing sentences independently and ensuring they use capital letters, full stops and finger spaces in every single sentence. Some children have also started learning about adjectives and how to use them in their writing, we will be practising this lots more over the year. This week we have also learnt how to write instructions and how important it is make them very clear.
In Science we have been looking at the seasons with a main focus on Autumn, the changes we can expect to see outside and the weather that we are experiencing.
We have enjoyed our Geography lessons each week discovering where Paddington Bear has visited by exploring the objects left behind in his suitcase. So far he has visited Peru, England and Wales, we have also started comparing Peru and England by talking about what is the same and what is different. Apparently we do not dress guinea pigs in clothes in England like they do in Peru! In Art we have looked at different ways of using colour and different mediums by exploring paint and pencils when recreating Paddington. In ICT we have discussed the different forms of technology we use at home and had a chance to explore Google Earth, lots of us managed to find our school and some of us even found our houses. In DT we all got the chance to make a marmalade sandwich just like Paddington keeps under his hat, lots of us enjoyed eating them too but some of us weren’t keen!
